Do Underground Fences Work?

If you’re looking for a way to contain your pup to your yard, but don’t want to spend a lot of time and energy putting up a fence, or simply don’t want to block your nice view or sully your beautiful landscaping with a clunky fence, an underground fence may be the way to go. Your next question might be, “Do underground fences really work?”

Yes, they do!

But how?

A wire is buried a few inches into the ground within a specific perimeter. The transmitter is usually mounted somewhere nearby and dry, such as in a garage. Underground fencing is much more flexible than traditional fencing, and can go where other fencing can’t. The underground fence can be customized to fit the shape of your yard. A hidden boundary is created for your dog. They wear a collar the communicates with the signal transmitter. If your dog gets too close or crosses the boundary, they will receive a correction.

There’s no worrying about your dog burrowing under your fence or hopping over it. You don’t have to worry about constantly fixing a broken fence, either. The most upkeep you’ll really have to worry about is charging or replacing the battery, depending on what type of system you invest in.

The key to the effectiveness of underground fencing lies in training. If they aren’t trained properly, the fence won’t work as well as it should. The good news is that your furry friends can learn easily. Even your cat can be trained to use an underground fence! To start, your dog should be walked (on a leash) around the border to learn about the new perimeter. Keep them on a leash and walk them around the border every single day for about three days. Walk them 10 laps per day so that they become very familiar with the perimeter. It’s important that you don’t let them go off leash too soon.
