Summer is almost here! Time to pack a bag and the kids and head out on the summer trip of your dreams! But who’s going to take care of your furry friends? If you’re hoping to take your precious pup on a trip with you, you need to make a few extra plans ahead of time.
Traveling
Has your dog traveled in a car with you before? We’re not just talking about a quick trip to the grocery store. We mean a long-distance trip where you may spend hours—even days—in the car. You’ll want to get him used to riding in the car for longer trips. He should also be in a safe place, whether that means a doggie car seat or a travel crate. Stop often so he can relieve himself, and be sure you have plenty of water to keep him hydrated.
If you’re traveling by air, check with the airline regarding their policy before you decide it’s a good idea to travel with your furry friend. It could be a stressful experience for him, so you’ll want to consider how your pet may handle the situation. Ensure you make him as comfortable as possible.
Hotel/Accommodations
You’ll need to check with hotels in the area to see if pets are allowed, if there is a size restriction, and if there will be an extra fee. Bring blankets and a dog bed so that the furniture in the hotel is protected. Bring toys so they don’t chew on anything in the room either. Prevent accidents by taking your dog out frequently.
Pet Friendly Parks and Venues
If you plan on leaving your dog in the hotel room the whole time, what is the point of bringing him? Be sure to research the parks, restaurants, and venues you’re visiting beforehand to ensure they’re pet friendly. Keep your dog on a leash when you’re outside of your hotel room.
Safety
Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations before vacation. Ensure with your vet that your dog is healthy enough to travel. Take his health records with you in case he gets sick on the trip or the hotel requests them. Keep your contact information on his collar in case he is separated from you.
Be sure to weigh the pros and cons before you decide to take your dog with you on vacation. If you end up deciding that taking him with you is out of the question, why not send them on a dog vacation to Fetchers? We have the perfect boarding facility and they’ll get to enjoy a vacation of their own while they make a bunch of furry friends!
